When one thinks of Imam Husain, they cannot help but think of the city of Karbala, where millions of people congregate year after year, during their Ziyarah trip, to pay homage to a hero who sacrificed his life along with 72 noble companions.

“Indeed, I did not leave out of self-conceit or vanity; neither to cause corruption, nor oppression. Rather, I left in order to seek reform in the nation of my grandfather (Prophet Muhammad) and father (Imam ‘Ali). I wish to promote virtue and prevent vice. So as for those who accept me in accepting the Truth, indeed God is of greater right over the Truth. As for those who reject, I will be patient until God judges between me and the people (who reject), with Truth, and He is the Best of Judges.” (Imam Husain in his own words)

Imam Husain left for Iraq with his closest family members, and a small band of valiant, faithful warriors to confront Yazid and his well-equipped army on the plains of Karbala. And despite having been cut off the river Euphates, they fought to the bitter end under the scorching sun of the desert, never wavering in their mission to save Islam.

The city of Karbala remained relatively unknown to people in the West, until Saddam’s fall from power, when television networks beamed footage of millions of people pouring into the shrine of Imam Husain and his brother, Al Abbas, onto our television screens. This seismic event was a turning point in the history of Karbala, and piqued people’s interest in the city of Hussain.  This interest, and indeed desire to visit Imam Husain in Iraq, has not declined in the years since. In fact, every year, more and more people visit Imam Husain on their Ziyarah trip, trips prepared and organised by ziyarah tour operators all over the world.

Many people dream of visiting Imam Husain (AS) in Karbala, and prepare well in advance to ensure they get the most out of their Ziyarah trip. On a typical Ziyarah trip to Iraq, one can expect to visit the following sites, including the shrine of Hazrat Hurr, the maqams (stations) of the right and left arms of Al-Abbas, the shrines of Ali Akbar and Ali Asghar (both sons of Imam Husain AS), maqam-e-Imam Zamana and tilla Zainabiyah.

But, of course, the magnus opus of any ziyarah trip to the holy land of Karbala, are the magnificent shrines of Imam Husain (AS) and Al-Abbas (AS).  If you have had the privilege of visiting the Imams, you will know that it’s a trip like no other, to a destination like no other, and the yearning to go back to the Imams burns in the hearts of the lovers of the Ahlulbayt.
